  • Happy to Translate celebrates Community Champions

Happy to Translate held their first open Members’ Event at Pollockshaws Burgh Hall, Glasgow on 26th October 2018.

Newly appointed ethnic minority Community Champions were presented with certificates to acknowledge their commitment to help raise awareness of Happy to Translate in their respective communities.

Round table discussions with Happy to Translate member organisations and community members were held offering a unique, first hand insight into the challenges faced by those who speak little or no English and the barriers they face when trying to access information and services.

Invited guests included Stewart McDonald MP for Glasgow South and James Dornan MSP for Glasgow Cathcart.

Stewart McDonald MP said: ‘Everyone has the right to access services and information. If there are any communication barriers, procedures should be in place to deal with them.  Happy to Translate is a good scheme for organisations to use to deliver services for those who face a language barrier.'

James Dornan MSP followed by saying that: ‘Communication is vital. If we can understand each other, we can help each other. That is why Happy to Translate is such a vital organisation.’

Rhona McLeod, Chief Executive of Trust Housing Association said: ‘The Happy to Translate team has been looking at ways of establishing a platform where member organisations can have direct contact and dialogue with communities.  Appointing Community Champions is an important step in that direction.'

Other invited speakers included Mukami McCrum MBE, Chair, Scottish Older People Ethnic Minority Forum and Jo Zawadzka, Polish Cultural Festival Association.
